What to look for when buying a DOWN COMFORT.
Buying a down comfort can be a confusing proposition.
They are available in numerous styles and at many different price levels.
To get the best value a shopper should be armed with as many facts as possible.
Down the soft inner plumage of ducks and geese
is made up of the light fluffy filaments that interlock to trap air and
body heat. There is no such thing as 100% down, because it is impossible
process all the feathers out of the down. Most down products contain between
70 to 80 percent down.
Fill power is a measure of the quality of down.
It indicates the downs ability to loft or trap air and the higher
the fill power means the down will provide greater warmth in relation to
weight. As a general rule fill power should be between 500 to 650.
Also check to comfort shell. Is the fabric down
proof? The tighter the weave the less chance that the down will come through
and the better it will wear. The shell should have a minimum count of 180.
Also all cotton shells will breathe allowing air to pass through to help
fluff up the down.
The way a comforter is constructed contributes
not only to its looks but also to its insulating ability. The stitching
pattern, which tacks the front of the shell to the back, can prevent loss
insulation by keeping the down from shifting. Also baffling, fabric pieces
that separate the top and bottom sections help eliminate pockets through
which cold air can enter.

Choosing the correct pillow for you.
Down & Feather - either
goose down or duck down or down/feather combination
The more down the softer the pillow.
The more feathers the firmer the pillow.
They are the most resilient and durable pillows available.
Synthetic - All polyester is a man made
material.
The softness or firmness is determined by how much fiber in a pillow.
The washable polyester fibers are more resilient & longer lasting than the non
washable pillows. |
Softness or Firmness
Soft
- The down pillow is the softest, either duck or goose. The cluster polyester
fiber or the lightweight polyester fiber would be next. A stomach sleeper would
enjoy either of these to do less cushioning between head and mattress.
Medium-The Duck or Goose combination of 50% feathers and 50% down, is a medium
filling. The medium-weight polyester fiber pillow would be filled with a
standard weight washable filling or a polyester branded fiber. A back sleeper
would enjoy either of these pillows to do the support they would give between
the head and the mattress.
Firm -
Duck or goose feather would be the firmest feather pillow. The extra weight or
overstuffed washable or branded polyester would be the firmest polyester pillow.
A side sleeper would enjoy and appreciate the cushion and support these pillows
provide. |
